Things to consider before buying a video card

If you have reached the end of our ranking but your opinions are not yet completely clear, here are the main aspects to consider to choose the best video card.

AMD VS Nvidia

The first choice to make is between an Nvidia video card or an AMD. Usually, Nvidia cards are the most widespread and the most recommended, due to better compatibility. The support provided by the company regarding drivers is excellent.

The main advantage of an AMD video card is a lower price with the same performance as Nvidia.

Clock speed and number of cores

The clock speed indicates how many operations the GPU processor can perform in a second. The higher this frequency, the better the performance in general.

As for the number of cores, however, a greater number indicates the possibility of performing multiple operations simultaneously, making efficiency better.

VRAM and memory clocks

VRAM stands for video RAM, and simply indicates the memory of a video card. A larger RAM is able to handle games with more details and support higher resolutions. For example, generally, to support a 4K resolution, you would need at least 5-6 GB of RAM in your card.

The memory clock, on the other hand, is the number of operations that the video card’s memory can perform in a second. This clock gives the possibility to carry out a higher number of operations as its value increases.

Outputs

Video outputs are essential to connect your card, and therefore your PC, to the monitor. Most video cards are now equipped with HDMI and even DVI-D, while the most obsolete VGA is absent.

Therefore, you will need to make sure that your monitor is compatible with the card. In addition, if you want to use a VR viewer, the card will surely have two HDMI sockets.

SLI / Crossfire

A more advanced feature, known and used by those who practice high-level gaming or use professional editing software, is compatibility with SLI / Crossfire. They are the same thing, except that SLI is the name on the Nvidia cards, and Crossfire is the name on the AMDs.

This feature allows you to install two video cards in parallel, so as to double performance, speed and computing power. It is used precisely by those who expect the best possible performance in their gaming business.

If you are not interested, this feature may not even be considered. Also, you should spend twice as much to buy the same card twice.

Your CPU

Although some may not know it, compatibility with your CPU is also very important. In fact, if your video card is too powerful for your processor, it will create an “bottleneck” effect called “bottleneck”. This occurs when your CPU is not powerful enough to take full advantage of the video card.

Therefore, before you throw yourself on a card that is too expensive, check that the processor is powerful enough.

Supply

More powerful video cards may need an external power supply, with a direct connection to your PC’s power supply. For this, your power supply must have sufficient wattage, or it will fail to supply power to all components.

There are also low-power cards, which are powered only by the motherboard.

Monitor and resolution

Finally, another compatibility factor to consider is the one with your monitor. First of all, the card and the monitor must have the same type of input / output, or you cannot connect them.

Also, if your monitor supports up to 4K, but the video card doesn’t, you’ll have to use a lower resolution. The latter, however, is a minor problem.

Project yourself into the future!

We are confident that our buying guide has made you understand which is the best video card for you. Technology advances at an incredible speed, and you deserve to keep up with the times. So choose the right model, and project yourself into the future!
