Factors to consider when purchasing a 3D printer

3D printing is a reality that up until a few years ago seemed almost science-fiction: in fact, a few years ago the various 3D printer manufacturers began to produce economic and non-economic models for home use (think, you can even find a mini 3D printer). First it was preferred to use them purely for industrial use, due to high maintenance costs and materials.

This is no longer the case today! Although these are not exactly cheap products, from our point of view it is a good initial investment, which can however give you the opportunity to make objects of any type, depending on the printer chosen.

In short, it’s worth spending a little for a similar technology, right? But let’s see in detail what you always need to keep in mind to buy a 3D printer … specifically, the best affordable 3D printer!

What do you want to print?

This is undoubtedly the first question you need to take when you’re about to buy a new 3D printer, whether it’s cheap or not. There are models suitable for printing prototypes, others designed for household objects, others still for printing children’s toys, others even for clothes! In short, there is plenty of choice!

Always keep in mind the use you want to make of your 3D printer … and you’ll be on the safe side! Obviously there are 3D printers that can print a bit of everything, often your imagination is the only limit!

The Materials

Most inexpensive and non-economic 3D printers use a specific technique called FFF. The operation of these products mainly consists in inserting a coil of wire inside the machine (the most common will be found under the abbreviations of ABS and PLA), wait until the printer melts the filament and extrudes it through special nozzles, for then see it solidify over time, following the shape dictated by the 3D model.

The difference between the ABS and PLA filaments is soon known: for example, the ABS is more flexible than its companion and requires a higher melting temperature but, as its characteristic, it always emits a kind of smoke with an unpleasant smell, when it melts. Obviously, it needs a heated 3D printing plan. In contrast, PLA prints look smoother, but the material tends to be more fragile.

You will also come across other materials such as wood, copper, polycarbonate and so on … but they are much less common than ABS and PLA.

The Connection

In the market there are 3 basic types of connection for a 3D printer.

Let’s start with the most common, that is the type of connection via USB connector. Virtually all 3D printers need to connect via USB at least once, for initialization. Some, however, need this type of connection even for 3D printing. It’s nothing complicated, just insert the connection pin between computer and printer, and voila!

The second type of connection is via an internal SD card. After connecting the 3D printer for the first time via USB, you can upload your projects to a memory card and insert it directly into the machine. This type of connection is very useful because it allows you to print in 3D even when the computer is off, since the printer will keep in memory what is inside the SD card.

The third and final type of connection is via Wi-Fi, or wireless: it obviously allows you to reach your 3D printer from your computer without using cables. Obviously, this connection will extend the communication time between the 3D printer and the computer.

Print open or closed

By reading our reviews you will now have realized that there are two types of boxes for 3D printing: closed and open. It goes without saying that they change depending on the 3D printer, and that both have specific features and characteristics.

The closed 3D printers are composed of a box made up of walls and a door, which will guarantee you greater safety (especially if you have children or animals in the house), a quieter print because they dampen the noise of the fan and, finally, can also reduce the bad smell of when the filaments melt.

The open 3D printers, on the other hand, do not have these precautions but they guarantee a better visibility of the product being printed, as well as an access to the extruders and to the printing plan much simpler and immediate.

So did you find the right 3D printer for you?

We did our part, recommending the best 3D printer models you can find on the market … but now it’s your turn!

We are sure that among these printers there is at least one that has piqued your interest. So what are you waiting for?

Buy now the best affordable 3D printer for you and … good print!
