The EU in the short term, will face serious challenges in connection with the anti-Russian sanctions over the situation in Ukraine, said the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell.

The journalist of the newspaper Kronen Zeitung in an interview with Borrell noted that part of the Austrian population is skeptical about the sanctions against Russia.

“It’s restrictive measures. We limit economic opportunities in Russia. The Russian economy is dependent on oil and gas, they will need our technology. Russia has difficulties. And, of course, we will face serious challenges in the short term. It cannot be denied that gas prices are rising. But we must be ready to pay the price for freedom,” Borrell said in an interview.

After the start of the Russian operation in the Ukraine, Western countries began to impose sanctions against Russia, in particular on Russian energy. Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the policy of containment and the weakening of Russia – this is a long-term strategy of the West, and the sanctions have dealt a serious blow to the global economy.
