Shoigu proposed to increase the SCO’s potential in the military sphere

TASHKENT, 24 Aug – RIA Novosti. The Minister of defence of Russia Sergey Shoigu proposed to increase the combat potential of the Shanghai cooperation organisation (SCO), in particular the mechanisms for information exchange in the field of military security.

“To improve the efficiency potential of the SCO on the military side. To activate and operationalize the work of the expert working group under the Council of defense Ministers of the SCO. Entrust it with the preparation of proposals on promising areas of cooperation between the defense ministries of the two countries,” – said Shoigu on Wednesday at a meeting of defense Ministers of the countries participating in the SCO, speaking about the priorities of the coalition to ensure security.

Such directions, according to him, would be, in particular, “the fight against unmanned aerial vehicles, information, and biological safety.”

The defense Minister also stated the need to improve the training of troops and the practice of holding joint exercises, exchange of best practices and testing new ways of counteraction to illegal armed groups. Noting that the maintenance of peace and security remains a key priority of the SCO, he also said that among the key objectives of the development of the SCO mechanism of information exchange in the field of military security.

“To create a legal framework for such cooperation, we have developed a draft Agreement on the organization of the rapid exchange of information between the defense departments of the States members of the Shanghai cooperation organization and its protection. Soon will send it to you for consideration,” – said Shoigu.

He expressed confidence that today’s meeting will provide a solid basis for further progressive development of the Shanghai cooperation organization, the maintenance of stability and security in the area of responsibility of the organization.
