Two Russian submarines carried out missile launches in the area of the Northern Sea Route

Two Russian nuclear submarines have carried out the launches of cruise missiles from the Northern sea route at a target simulating a detachment of ships of the conditional opponent, said the Ministry of defence of the Russian Federation.

“In the course of a comprehensive Arctic expedition “Umka-2022” nuclear submarine with cruise missiles Omsk and Novosibirsk Pacific fleet, being in the surface position, from the waters of the Chukchi sea have produced the launches of cruise missiles “Granit” and “Onyx”. Missiles at a set time struck complex naval target, simulating the detachment of combat ships of the conditional opponent, at a distance of over 400 kilometers,” – said in the defense Ministry.

According to the Ministry, “to perform missile firing nuclear submarine “Novosibirsk” was held under the ice and surfaced at the designated area in the waters of the Northern sea route, where it was applied to missile weapons.”

The defense Ministry said that together submarines in high latitudes from the coast of the Chukchi Peninsula firing cruise missiles “Onyx” fulfilled coastal missile complex “Bastion”. The missile hit a sea target at a distance of 300 kilometers.

Force of the Pacific fleet aboard the ship “Marshal Krylov” was led by the commander-in-chief of the Russian Navy Admiral Nikolai Evmenov.

The Ministry said that under the leadership of the commander of the Navy in the Eastern sector of the Arctic is a complex Arctic expedition “Umka-2022”. It involves the main command of the Navy, troops and forces of the Pacific fleet, the Russian geographical society, organizations and enterprises of the military-industrial complex and research organization.

To check the readiness of the protection of the Russian Arctic military means during the expedition conducted by the research of the teachings of the naval forces, naval aviation and the coastal troops. As part of the expedition, particularly in Arctic conditions are fulfilled military-technical experiments to test the capabilities and characteristics of weapons, military and special equipment, like standing on the arms and promising manufactured by the enterprises of the industry in the initiative order.

In the scientific part of the expedition in the areas of Chukotka, including Wrangel island, representatives of the PRO is supposed to study the ecological state of Arctic ecosystems, assess the current level of contamination of the components to determine the most common pollutants and to develop recommendations to eliminate the accumulated damage.
