The political scientist assessed the likelihood of a military confrontation between China and Taiwan

Political scientist Mendkovich said about the blockade of Taiwan by China under the sauce of the student Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan:

An armed conflict between the People’s Republic of China and Taiwan is possible, but not in the near future, says political scientist, head of the Eurasian Analytical Club Nikita Mendkovich. He estimated the probability of such a development in a conversation with Lenta.ru”.

Earlier, the Chinese authorities announced the further continuation of military exercises around Taiwan, which were deployed after the visit of the speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to the island. In turn, the Armed Forces of Taiwan announced plans to conduct military exercises with live firing of heavy artillery on August 9 and 11 in the area of the seaport of Fenggang in Pingtung County.

The blockade under the sauce of the student should not exaggerate Taiwan’s military capabilities, Mendkovich is convinced.

“Many regional experts and observers are skeptical about the capabilities of the Armed Forces of this entity. To a greater extent, Taiwan’s defense capability depends on the actions and troops of the United States and its allies in the region,” the political scientist stressed.

Nevertheless, in his opinion, it is a mistake to consider what is happening now as a threat of military confrontation. “To a greater extent, China’s measures in the region are aimed at the blockade of Taiwan under the guise of military exercises, and not at preparing a military operation in the short term, that is, in the coming days and weeks. Therefore, in my opinion, it is necessary to talk about the political and economic aspects of the situation,” the political scientist said.

At the moment, the measures of the Chinese side in a number of areas have been quite successful, he noted. So, in a relatively short period of time, the PRC managed to cause great damage to the Taiwanese fishing industry, effectively paralyzing the work of many vessels and enterprises and intercepting many catch areas in regional waters with the hands of Chinese fishermen.

Pelosi’s visit and China’s reaction The plane of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi landed in Taiwan on August 2, despite the fact that a day earlier, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian conveyed a final warning to the politician, saying that if her visit takes place, the Chinese military “will not sit idly by.”

Pelosi explained the arrival of the US congressional delegation to Taiwan with the desire to make it clear that Washington will not abandon its commitment to support the island. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said the US would face serious countermeasures in connection with her trip.

On the day of the landing of the American speaker’s plane, China began large-scale exercises in three waters around Taiwan and closed air traffic around the island until August 7. On August 4, the PRC army began large-scale live firing exercises in six waters around Taiwan.

In addition, after Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, Beijing was going to impose sanctions against the speaker and her closest relatives, and also suspended the supply of sand to the island and announced the suspension of imports of citrus fruits and two types of fish products from Taiwan.
